Being blamed for a drawing that was approved

This is the one that arrives first and lands hardest. Somebody signed the drawing, the thing could not be built, and the conversation is about you.

Two things are true at once, and holding both is the whole skill. An approval is a contract event and carries no technical weight, so the signature was never the check you thought it was. And a set that reached the floor unbuildable is still a set that should have been walked to the floor first. The defence is not the signature. It is the written question you sent, the assumption you noted on the sheet, and the revision block that carries both.

Being the youngest person in the shop

You will be told you do not know how it is built, and for a while that will be true. That is a reason to go and stand at the machine, not a reason to stop asking. The drafters the floor trusts are the ones who walked out there when they did not have to.

Banter, and where it stops

Workshops run on it and most of it is fine. It stops being banter when it is always the same person, when it follows them off the floor, or when they have asked and it continued. If that is happening to you: write down what, when and who was there, before you do anything else. Memory is not evidence and a contemporaneous note is.

Unpaid overtime and the submission deadline

Drafting is where a schedule goes to be absorbed. The package is due, the architect is slow, the shop needs release, and the compression lands on one desk. It is worth knowing plainly that a drawing produced at two in the morning is where the dimension errors come from — the cost of that hour is not paid by the person working it.

Isolation
